The PUG Page
Can't say enough about these little guys. I was climbing in Kentucky when I first met a Pug named "Buddy." Pugs don't know what "strangers" are, and I could tell right away that this breed was uniquely qualified to be called a "companion breed." I did a little homework (actually, I compiled a file about two inches thick on Pugs) and got Rosco from a world class Mastiff and American Bull Dog breeder in North Georgia whose pet Pugs had one litter they were selling. I met Rosco P. Dog when he was just five weeks old and looking more like a hamster than a dog. Pugs are probably the best-natured dog to have ever existed. Every Pug we ever met was just as sweet-natured, and I soon found that Pug owners will stop in traffic to see any other Pug they glimpse. I am no exception. They are the number one therapy dog too, and you can see why when you walk one out in public. If people are in eyeshot of a Pug, they are smiling. It's not just their looks, it's the way they like to clown around and entertain you too. It's funny to see even the surliest and burliest of men melt when they are around one of these dogs. Pugs are smart anyway, but Rosco took that to a whole 'nother level. He would teach himself tricks that he would practice on his own. At first, I though that he did this to entertain, but soon learned about the Pug's strong sense of self - they don't do anything unless there's something in it for them. He just liked to figure stuff out. They are as proud and willful as they are affectionate. I've met a lot of dogs that I have liked a lot, but Rosco is the only dog I have ever known who I 'respected.' I swear he could have talked to us. I bought a second Pug, Viggo, (a little black fella' this time - they come in two colors) when Rosco was about a year-and-a-half old. I haven't scanned any pix of him yet but I have boatloads. I'll get to that soon. I still have a soft spot for this breed of dogs (although I love nearly all dogs), and I miss my boys a lot (after the divorce). I'd like to get another one but my travel and training schedule just makes that a selfish thought. I couldn't give one the time it would need with his human. Someday...
