On the Subject of Self-Promotion:

"Your accomplishments speak for themselves; and if they do not - are they really worth talking about?"

Having said that, I will leave my bios on the website as part of my info for what I do for a living, and I hope that's all I ever have to do, because I don't really like the sound of hearing me talk about myself. For the rest of my life I hope I can just respond with "it's all on the site" if I am invited to talk about myself. I figure that if anyone then willingly navigates that far with their mouse, then it's their own choice. So you still want to know more about my climbing and fitness credentials? Then click here.

In recent years, I have gone away and focused on other things besides my own career, giving me a more balanced perspective on what's important. I mean, what good does it do anyone if I can grab a small rock hand hold and pull hard?

In the past, as a writer / athlete / climber - it has been important (I thought) for my credentials to be discussed so that clients and readers alike would have the info. I always saw it the way a business sees marketing - and my product was myself. All true, but...

  • I have grown tired of "putting myself out there." As I grew and (hopefully) matured as a person, I had less and less tolerance for hearing me talk about myself. I never really enjoyed it, but now I have come to a place where I find it distasteful - even if it is necessary.

  • At this point, I would rather just let opportunities to write, build, train, or whatever come to me rather than seek them out through self-promotion. Maybe it will happen less often. I don't know. But I honestly don't care as much. I would rather be an anonymous "regular guy" who doesn't have any need to self-promote than be a famous climber or writer.

Have a Blessed Day
